Silicone sealants are primarily used to seal various automobile and appliance frames in order to withstand harsh weather conditions

Silicone
sealants come in a wide variety of flavors and
textures. The pressure-sensitive variety has a permanent tackiness and sticks
to things that press against it. In contrast, the non-pressure sensitive
variant releases no odor and is more suitable
for use in interiors and exteriors. However, neutral silicone sealants are more
expensive and require one to five days for complete curing. Acid-cure silicones
are best for non-porous surfaces such as metal and glass. In contrast, the
neutral ones work well on metal and wood.
As a
general rule, neutral-cured
silicone sealants produce less acetic acid during curing and are better
for a variety of materials. They are also faster to apply and cure, but they
can be more expensive. Aside from neutral curing, there are other options that
do not release acetic acid. They are called "food-safe silicone."
These are great options for interior or exterior sealing and are often used for
refrigerators and other similar applications. For instance, in December 2021,
Meridian Adhesives Group acquired American Sealants, a silicone sealants provider for the industrial and retail sectors in
the U.S., to boost its portfolio of product assembly adhesives.
According
to RICS 2020a, a report commissioned by the RICS for its Global Construction
Monitor, 25% of projects were put on hold during the lockdown caused by
COVID-19. Raw material shortages, supply chain disruptions, and the closure of
key facilities have all hit the construction industry. As the industrial sector
struggles to recover from the recession, silicone
sealants are an excellent solution. Applied to various industrial
equipment, sealants are a great way to protect against contamination. Silicone
sealants are produced by several companies. Dow, for example, is a global
leader in silicone technologies. While many companies offer organic polymer
sealants, silicone is preferred as it adheres to a wider range of materials.
The sealants also maintain their stability in a wide temperature range. For
instance, specialty items can withstand temperatures of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
These trends have facilitated the development of a market for high-quality and
durable construction materials.
